The silence inside the club became unbearable. Claire stood frozen beneath the chandelier, her trembling hand still pressed against the edge of the table. Victor finally stepped into view, but the fury on his face had vanished. That frightened her more. He looked at the shattered plate, then at the wine spreading across the marble. “Why did you destroy it, Claire?” he asked quietly. She forced a laugh. “Because that disgusting boy ruined our dinner.” Victor’s eyes narrowed. “No. He ruined my dinner. You destroyed the evidence.” Claire swallowed hard. “Evidence? Victor, listen to yourself.” He leaned closer. “I am. And for the first time tonight, I’m listening to him too.”

Claire grabbed her clutch and tried to move away, but Victor caught her wrist—not violently, just firmly enough to stop her. “Sit down.” Her expression twisted. “Take your hand off me.” Victor released her immediately, then turned toward the head waiter. “Nobody leaves this floor.” Claire’s face drained further. “You can’t imprison an entire room because of some street rat’s fantasy!” Victor replied, “Then you have nothing to fear.” He pointed toward the shattered steak. “Bag every piece. The meat, the plate, the glass, everything.” Claire suddenly snapped, “You’re humiliating me!” Victor stared directly into her eyes. “You screamed for security when a child accused you. Now I’m asking for proof. Which one of us is afraid of humiliation?”

A security guard approached Victor carefully. “Mr. Harrington… there’s something else.” Claire’s head whipped toward him. The guard held up a small black object. “We found this under Mrs. Harrington’s chair.” It was a tiny silver capsule, crushed slightly at one end. Claire lunged forward. “That isn’t mine!” Victor stopped her with one look. “Don’t touch it.” The room erupted in whispers. Claire’s voice cracked. “Someone planted that!” Victor replied, “Then we’ll find out who.” The maître d’ nervously stepped forward. “Sir, every table in this section is covered by private security cameras.” Claire’s eyes widened. Victor turned slowly toward her. “Good.” Claire whispered, “Victor… don’t.” His expression hardened. “Don’t what? Watch what happened?”

Minutes later, the club’s private monitor illuminated the wall. Guests gathered in stunned silence. The footage showed Victor leaving the table briefly to greet another investor. Claire remained seated. She looked around once. Twice. Then her hand disappeared beneath the table. A moment later, she leaned toward Victor’s plate. The image was partly blocked by a waiter—but Claire’s fingers clearly moved above the steak. “Turn it off!” she screamed. Victor didn’t blink. “Keep playing.” Claire rushed toward the screen, but security blocked her path. “Victor, I can explain!” He answered coldly, “Then explain.” Claire’s composure shattered. “It wasn’t supposed to kill you!” A collective gasp tore through the room. Victor’s voice dropped to almost a whisper. “What did you just say?”

Claire covered her mouth, realizing too late what she had admitted. Victor stepped toward her. “Say it again.” Tears suddenly filled her eyes. “I only wanted you unconscious.” Victor’s jaw tightened. “Why?” Claire shook her head violently. “Because you were going to change the trust! You were going to remove me!” Victor stared at her in disbelief. She shouted, “After twelve years, you were going to leave me with nothing!” Victor replied, “So you drugged my dinner?” Claire collapsed into a chair. “I needed time. Just one night. I needed access to your signature authorization before the lawyers filed everything tomorrow.” Victor’s expression became ice. “You weren’t trying to save our marriage.” Claire whispered, “Victor…” He cut her off. “You were trying to rob me before I woke up.”

The double doors suddenly opened. Jake stood between two guards, terrified and confused. Victor looked at him for a long moment. Then he walked across the room. Jake instinctively stepped backward. “I’m sorry,” Jake muttered. “I shouldn’t have hit your hand.” Victor crouched slightly so they were eye level. “You saved my life.” Jake shook his head. “I just saw her pour something from that silver thing. Nobody would listen to me downstairs.” Victor turned toward his security chief. “Who threw him out?” The guard answered, “We did, sir. On Mrs. Harrington’s order.” Victor stood. “Bring him food. Call his family. And nobody lays another hand on him.” Jake hesitated. “You believe me now?” Victor looked toward Claire, then back at Jake. “I should have believed you before I called you trash.”

Claire was escorted toward the elevator as distant police sirens approached below. She twisted around one final time. “Victor! You can’t let one filthy nobody destroy everything we built!” Victor stopped dead. Jake lowered his eyes, but Victor turned slowly toward Claire. “That ‘nobody’ had more courage tonight than everyone at this table—including me.” Claire’s face collapsed. “Please… don’t do this.” Victor answered, “You did this.” The elevator doors opened behind her. “And Claire?” She looked back, desperate. Victor placed a protective hand on Jake’s shoulder. “The boy you wanted thrown into the street is the reason you didn’t leave here a billionaire’s widow.” Claire began sobbing as the guards led her away. The doors closed. Victor looked down at Jake. “Hungry?” Jake gave the smallest uncertain nod. Victor pulled out the chair beside him. “Then sit. Tonight, you eat at my table.”
